GM’s always been a perplexing company. They get “gee whiz” details like that right, but screw up major things.
another thing they did right gauge wise is on their modern cars; if you change the dash readouts from English to Metric, the sweep of the speedo needle changes to calibrated in km/h. So the speedo doesn’t need to have two separate scales on it. I have to think GM has patents on that because I’ve not seen
anyone
else do this.
